FA1: The Boxing Sparring Partner Android

Posted 30 Dec 2005 at 05:21 UTC by The Swirling Brain Share This

Self Defense Technologies, Inc. has developed a robotic boxing sparring partner that is being hailed as the world's first true fighting android. The robot, called Fighting Android FA1, allows boxers to practice and improve their moves, punches, kicks and defensive blocks. Punching bags and other practice methods all have their drawbacks in that they can't offer a level of realism for practice. Sparring appears to be the best practice but many sparring partners receive stray punches that can lead to injury. The robot substitutes for sparring partners so boxers can practice without having to ask others to become a live punching bag for practice. The robot can be programmed to punch, block and even dodge its head. The robot will be displayed at the 2006 International CES.
