Fujitsu has announced a successor to the HOAP-1 humanoid robot which was released in 2001. The HOAP-1 was a 48cm, 20 DOF robot that sold for $48,000. The new HOAP-2 is 50cm high with 25 DOF. It now has articulated fingers allowing it to grip objects. No word on a price for the HOAP-2 yet but Fujitsu will begin taking orders April 20th and the first HOAP-2 robots will ship in July of 2003. Both the HOAP-1 and HOAP-2 are tethered and rely on an external computer and power. Both robots run Linux. Several MPEG videos of the HOAP-2 are available online.
