The quickest way to download a Snapchat Story you created is to open your profile and tap the download icon next to the Story, saving the entire thing to your device in one tap. If you only want a single Snap from that Story, you can swipe up on it while viewing it and tap the download icon, which saves just that photo or video to your Memories; you can also download photos from Snapchat that others have sent you before they disappear. If you prefer managing your saved content on a larger screen, you can download Snapchat on a computer to access your Memories there.
How to download a Snapchat Story you created
Your own Stories are the only ones you can save in full, and Snapchat gives you two official methods that take seconds. The first saves the whole Story as a single file, and the second lets you pick individual Snaps.
- Tap your Profile icon (or Bitmoji) at the top of the camera screen.
- Tap the download icon next to the Story’s name to save the entire Story to your device.
To save just one Snap from that Story, tap “My Story” to open it, swipe up on the specific Snap you want, and tap the download icon at the bottom. That Snap goes straight to your camera roll, while the rest of the Story stays untouched.
Save a Snap you added to a Shared or Private Story
If you contributed to a Shared or Private Story with friends, you can only save the Snaps you personally added, never anyone else’s. Snapchat’s privacy rules block saving other people’s contributions, and attempting to do so will not work.
- Tap your Profile icon to open My Account.
- Tap the name of the Shared or Private Story to expand it.
- Tap the Snap you added to view it.
- Tap the download icon at the bottom of the screen.
That single Snap saves to your device. The other members’ Snaps in that same Story remain unsavable, so if you want to keep a group moment, you’ll need to ask the person who posted it to send it to you directly.
Save a Snap or friend's Story in Chat
For Snaps sent directly to you in Chat, Snapchat offers a limited “Save in Chat” feature that works only for photo Snaps set to no time limit and video Snaps set to loop (look for the ∞ icon). This is the sole official way to keep a friend’s Snap, and it’s not available for regular Stories.
- Open the Chat where the Snap is located.
- Press and hold on the Snap while viewing it.

If you’re tired of manually saving every Story, you can turn on auto-save so every Snap you add to My Story is copied to Memories the moment you post it. This guarantees nothing is lost, even if you forget to save before the 24-hour window closes.
- Scroll to “Memories” and tap it.
With this enabled, every Snap you add to My Story is automatically stored in Memories, giving you a permanent backup. You can still manually save individual Snaps or entire Stories as needed, but the auto-save acts as a safety net for your daily posts.
What the notification icon means
Every time a Snap or Story is saved, whether by you or someone else, the person who posted it sees a screenshot icon appear in the read receipts for that Snap. This is Snapchat’s transparency feature: there is no silent way to save content, and the icon tells the poster exactly who saved what and when. If you save a friend’s Snap in Chat, they’ll see that icon immediately; if you save your own Story, only you see it, but the system still logs it. This reinforces the platform’s core rule: saving is always visible, and consent is built into the design. Keep your memories safe without breaking trust
Your saved Stories and Snaps live in Memories, which is convenient but not a true backup, if your phone is lost or your account is compromised, you could lose everything.
