University of Copenhagen scientists have discovered that spinal neurons produce irregular firing patterns similar to those seen in the cerebral cortex during the network activity required for movement. These findings contradict current ideas about the role of spinal cord function. Ultimately, this new understanding of a more distributed control of motor function in nature might prove to be a powerful strategy for complex actuator control in robotic systems.
