To log out of Apple TV, go to Settings, then Users and Accounts, and select your account. For the primary user, choose Remove User from Apple TV; for additional accounts, select iCloud and then Sign Out.
How to log out of your Apple TV account
You might need to log out of Apple TV for two main reasons: to switch to a different Apple ID account, or to protect your privacy before letting someone else use the device. It is important to understand the difference between removing the default user and signing out additional accounts. The default account is the one used to set up the Apple TV; removing it signs the device out of all Apple services. Additional accounts are secondary users you have added, for these, you sign out of iCloud individually while keeping the account on the device. If you are also managing subscriptions on other streaming devices, you can similarly log out of Paramount plus on Roku to prevent unwanted access.
Log out the primary Apple ID account
To sign out the primary (default) Apple ID on an Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD:
- Open Settings on your Apple TV.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose your account name from the list.
- Select Remove User from Apple TV.
This action removes the default user and signs the device out of your Apple ID completely. Your apps and content remain on the device, but you will need to sign in again to use them.
Sign out of an additional user account
If you have added secondary accounts to your Apple TV, follow these steps to sign one out without affecting the primary user:
- Go to Settings and select Users and Accounts.
- Select the account name you want to sign out.
- Choose iCloud.
- Select Sign Out.
This signs the additional user out of iCloud services while keeping their account profile on the device. To fully remove the account, you would need to delete it from Users and Accounts.
What doesn't log you out of Apple TV
Some actions might seem like they would sign you out, but they do not affect your Apple ID login. Force quitting an app, by double-pressing the TV button and swiping up, closes the app but does not log you out of your Apple ID. Similarly, restarting the Apple TV or unplugging it will not sign you out. The only way to log out is through the Users and Accounts settings as described above. This is also different from signing out of streaming apps, such as Netflix or Hulu, which you manage within each individual app. If you need to switch profiles on a different brand of TV, you can log out of Netflix on Vizio TV through its own app settings. Removing a device from your Apple ID account list at appleid.apple.com or through the Apple Music or Apple TV app on a computer also does not sign you out on the Apple TV hardware itself, it only disassociates the device for purchases and content downloads.
