When your Chime card is locked, new purchases and ATM withdrawals with the physical card are declined, but digital wallet transactions through Apple Pay or Google Pay may still work. The lock applies to the physical card, but mobile wallet purchases may still work because they often use a separate virtual card number. If you have already added your Chime card to a digital wallet and then toggle the lock on in the Chime app, you can often still use the card through your phone because digital wallet transactions may function independently of the physical card's locked status.

Why a locked Chime card blocks mobile wallet payments

The lock disables the physical card number, but digital wallet transactions using a virtual card number may still succeed. When you add your Chime card to Apple Pay or Google Pay, the wallet creates a device-specific token that masks your real card number. However, that token is still linked to your Chime account and the same funding source. The moment you choose to lock chime card in the app settings, the system flags your physical card as inactive, but digital wallet transactions may still work. The token may bypass the physical card lock because digital wallet transactions often use a virtual card number that functions independently. So even though the merchant sees a token instead of your card number, the payment may still be approved because digital wallet transactions can function independently of the physical card's locked status.

What the lock does not stop

Transactions that were already pending before the lock, recurring bill payments linked to your account and routing numbers, and direct deposits are not affected. For example, if you locked your card after swiping at a gas station but before the final amount settled, that pending charge will still post. Similarly, any ACH transfers, such as your paycheck sent via direct deposit or a monthly subscription that pulls from your bank account and routing number, will continue to process normally because they do not run through the card network. The lock also does not interfere with cash loads at the Chime card loading locations, such as Walmart or CVS, because those are deposit operations, not purchases. You can still add cash to your account even while the card is locked.

The common mistake people make

Many users assume Apple Pay and Google Pay work independently from the physical card, and they often do, digital wallet transactions may still be approved even when the physical card is locked. A frequent error is thinking that locking the card only affects the plastic chip and magnetic stripe. In reality, the lock applies to the physical card, but digital wallet transactions may still work independently. If you need to make a digital wallet payment, you can often do so even with the physical card locked, without switching it to an active state. After that, you can also change your Chime card PIN if you suspect unauthorized access, though the PIN change only applies to ATM and in-store chip transactions, it does not affect the lock itself. Additionally, the lock does not impact your ability to find the Chime card cash withdrawal locations, such as ATMs in the MoneyPass network, because those are withdrawals from your balance, not purchases. Always double-check your lock status before tapping your phone to pay.
