To zoom with OptiFine in Minecraft Java Edition, press and hold the default C key to instantly magnify the center of your screen, then release it to return to your normal view. If you're on an older OptiFine version or a Forge installation, the default may instead be Left-CTRL, so check your controls if C doesn't respond.
What you need before installing OptiFine
OptiFine adds a dedicated zoom feature exclusively to Minecraft Java Edition, so you must be playing the Java version, not Bedrock or any other edition. Before you install, verify that you have Java 8 or higher installed on your system, this is a hard requirement for the mod to run. You also need to download the OptiFine version that precisely matches your Minecraft game version; a mismatch will cause installation or launch failures. The standalone .jar installer works without Forge, so you don't need to install any additional mod loaders just to get the zoom feature.
Installing OptiFine to get the zoom feature
Once your prerequisites are met, installation is straightforward. Run the official OptiFine .jar installer, select "Install" when prompted, and the mod will be placed into your Minecraft directory automatically. After the installer finishes, open the Minecraft launcher, go to the "Installations" tab, and choose the OptiFine profile from the version dropdown. Launch the game with that profile selected, and the zoom feature will be active immediately.
Enabling and using the zoom in-game
To locate the keybind, open the main menu, go to "Options," then "Controls," and scroll down to the "Miscellaneous" section where you'll find the "Zoom" entry. The default behavior is hold-to-zoom: press and hold the assigned key to zoom in, and release it to snap back to your normal field of view. If you prefer not to hold the key, OptiFine also offers a toggle mode for the zoom feature, which can be enabled in the Controls menu, this lets you press once to zoom in and press again to zoom out on Xbox.

Changing the zoom keybind
To rebind the zoom key, navigate to "Options" from the main menu, then select "Controls." In the Controls menu, scroll down to the "Miscellaneous" section and locate the "Zoom" entry. Click on the "Zoom" entry and press your desired new key to rebind it, the game will instantly register your choice. Avoid setting the zoom key to one already used for another action, such as sprint, as conflicting keybinds may appear red in the menu, which indicates the key is double-assigned and may cause unpredictable behavior. If you ever want to revert, click the "Reset" button next to the zoom keybind to restore it to the default C key. Choose a key that's comfortable for your hand position and not already in use, so you can zoom in and out without breaking your movement or combat flow.
