To remove suggestions from Safari, you need to disable either Safari Suggestions (Apple's own recommendations from services like Music and Maps) or search engine suggestions (terms sent to and returned from your search engine). Disable Safari Suggestions on Mac
Safari Suggestions can clutter your Smart Search Field with recommendations from Music, Maps, stock prices, or Wikipedia entries. To stop these Apple service suggestions from appearing:
- Open Safari on your Mac.
- From the menu bar, click Safari > Settings (or Preferences).
- Click the Search tab.
- Deselect Include Safari Suggestions.
This prevents Safari from showing any Apple-sourced recommendations while you type in the address bar.
Disable search engine suggestions on Mac
Search engine suggestions send your partial search terms to your chosen search engine and display its predictions. Disabling this stops that data from being sent and hides the returned suggestions.
- In Safari, go to Safari > Settings > Search.
- Deselect Include search engine suggestions.
This ensures your keystrokes are no longer transmitted to the search engine for prediction purposes.
Stop other search-related suggestions on Mac
Even with Safari Suggestions and search engine suggestions disabled, two additional settings can still generate suggestions. To create a completely suggestion-free search field, turn these off as well:
- Deselect Preload Top Hit in the background to stop Safari from loading the top suggestion before you press Enter.
- Deselect Enable Quick Website Search to prevent Safari from offering to search within specific sites directly from the Smart Search field.
With all four options unchecked, your address bar will no longer present any suggestions, predictions, or preloaded content.
Disable Safari Suggestions on iPhone or iPad
On iOS and iPadOS, Safari Suggestions are controlled through the system Settings app, not within Safari itself. This toggle removes Apple service recommendations from the address bar.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Scroll down and tap Safari.
- Under the Search section, toggle off Safari Suggestions.
This stops suggestions from Apple services like Music, Maps, and App Store content from appearing as you type. Note that if you use Safari on Android, the process for managing suggestions differs because Safari on Android is not the same browser and there is no system-level toggle for Safari Suggestions on that platform.
