How To Use Venmo Virtual Card
To use your Venmo virtual card, open the Venmo app and navigate to the Cards tab, where you can view your card details or add the card to a digital wallet for contactless payments. Whether you have the Venmo Credit Card or Venmo Debit Card, your virtual card number lets you shop online immediately and in stores via Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay.
What Is a Venmo Virtual Card?
A Venmo virtual card is a digital version of your physical Venmo card that you can use for online purchases and contactless in-store payments. There are two ways to pay digitally with Venmo: the Venmo Credit Card provides an instant virtual card number the moment you're approved, while the Venmo Debit Card offers accessible card details within the app that you can view and use right away. Both cards function like standard Mastercard or Visa cards but exist only in digital form, eliminating the need to carry a plastic card for everyday transactions. If you need the actual digits to complete an online checkout, you can see my Venmo card number in the app. If you'd rather skip the card entirely, you can also use Venmo without a card by paying directly from your in-app balance or linked bank account.
How to Access Your Venmo Virtual Card Details
Finding your virtual card details takes only a few taps inside the Venmo app, though the exact steps differ slightly between the Credit Card and Debit Card.
For Venmo Credit Card
- Open the Venmo app on your mobile device and log in.
- Tap the "Cards" tab located at the bottom left of the screen.
- Select your Venmo Credit Card.
- Tap "Card Details" or "Virtual Card Information."
- Verify your identity by entering the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number, your card's expiration date, and the CVV code.
For Venmo Debit Card
- Open the Venmo app and sign in to your account.
- Tap the "Cards" tab at the bottom left.
- Choose your Venmo Debit Card from the list.
- Look for "Card Details" or "Virtual Card Information."
- Complete the identity verification prompt to reveal your full card number, expiration date, and security code.
Once you've completed these steps, your virtual card details will appear on screen, ready for use in online checkout forms or for adding to a digital wallet.
Making Online Purchases with Your Virtual Card
Your Venmo virtual card works at any online store that accepts Mastercard or Visa, giving you a secure way to shop without exposing your primary bank account details. When you reach the checkout page on a website or app, select the option to pay with a credit or debit card, then manually enter the card number, expiration date, and CVV exactly as they appear in your Venmo app. The transaction processes just like a standard card payment, and the purchase amount is deducted from your Venmo balance or linked funding source.
One key security benefit of using the virtual card for online purchases is that Venmo generates a unique card number for each transaction when you use the Credit Card's virtual feature. This means your actual card details are never shared with the merchant, reducing the risk of fraud if a website's database is compromised. For the Debit Card, the virtual card number is the same as your physical card, but you still avoid typing your bank account information directly into third-party sites.
How to Use Your Venmo Virtual Card in Stores
To pay at physical retail locations, you'll need to add your Venmo virtual card to a mobile wallet that supports contactless payments. This enables you to tap your phone or smartwatch at any terminal that accepts Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay.
Add to Apple Pay
- Open the Venmo app and go to the Cards tab.
- Select your Venmo Credit Card or Debit Card.
- Tap "Add to Apple Pay" and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Confirm the card details in the Wallet app when prompted.
Add to Google Pay
- Launch the Venmo app and navigate to the Cards tab.
- Choose your Venmo card and tap "Add to Google Pay."
- Follow the prompts to complete the setup in the Google Pay app.
Add to Samsung Pay
- Open the Venmo app and access the Cards tab.
- Select your card and tap "Add to Samsung Pay."
- Verify the card information in the Samsung Pay app to finish.
Once added, hold your device near the contactless payment terminal at checkout. The terminal will read your virtual card via NFC technology, and you'll receive a confirmation on your phone once the payment is approved. Before attempting to pay, verify that the store accepts contactless payments by looking for the wireless payment icon at the register.
How to Generate a New Virtual Card Number
If you suspect your Venmo Credit Card virtual number has been compromised, you can request a replacement directly within the app. This process instantly deactivates the old virtual card number and generates a fresh one, protecting your account from unauthorized use.
- Open the Venmo app and tap the Cards tab.
- Select your Venmo Credit Card.
- Tap "Card Details" or "Virtual Card Information."
- Look for the option labeled "Get New Card Number" or "Replace Virtual Card."
- Confirm your choice when prompted.
After you confirm, Venmo will immediately invalidate the previous virtual card number and display your new one. You'll need to update this number at any online merchants where you had it saved, and re-add the card to your digital wallets if you use it for contactless payments. This feature is available exclusively for the Venmo Credit Card; the Debit Card's virtual number is tied to your physical card and cannot be regenerated separately.
Venmo Virtual Card Limits and Requirements
Before relying on your Venmo virtual card for everyday spending, it's important to understand the limits and eligibility criteria that apply. The Venmo Debit Card has a daily purchase limit of $3,000.00, which resets at 12 AM CT, and a daily transaction limit of 30 transactions per day, resetting at 12 AM CST. These caps apply to both virtual and physical card usage, so if you hit either threshold, you'll need to wait until the next day to continue making purchases.
For the Venmo Credit Card, your account may have a temporarily reduced credit limit until you receive and activate your physical card in the mail. Once you activate the plastic card, your full approved credit limit becomes available, and the virtual card continues to work alongside it. To use any Venmo card, you must be at least 18 years old, physically located in the United States, have a U.S.-based cell phone number, and use Venmo app version 7.38.2 or newer (or iOS 17/Android Lollipop API 26+).
When making purchases, always verify that the merchant accepts Mastercard (for Debit Card) or Visa (for Credit Card) before attempting to pay. If a transaction is declined, double-check that you have sufficient funds in your Venmo balance or linked funding source, and confirm that you're entering the correct card details. Be cautious of any unsolicited requests for your card number, Venmo will never ask for your Venmo Debit Card information, including the card number, via email, text, or phone calls, so report such requests immediately to Venmo support.
