Motor stuttering is almost always caused by a broken connection on one of the three phase wires between the ESC and motor, or by the ESC being set to an incorrect timing mode for your motor's pole count. Check for cold solder joints or loose bullet connectors first, then try switching the ESC timing to 'Medium-High' if the wiring is intact.

Check the physical phase wires for drone motor stuttering

Inspect each of the three phase wires where they solder to the ESC pads and the motor windings. A cold solder joint looks dull, gray, or cracked rather than shiny silver. Gently tug each wire with tweezers; if the wire lifts from the pad, you have a cold joint. Also check bullet connectors by plugging and unplugging them three times, a loose fit or bent pin will cause intermittent contact on one phase. Frayed strands where the wire enters the connector are equally common. Swap a known good motor to isolate the fault

Take a motor that spins up perfectly on another ESC and connect it to the ESC that is stuttering. If that known-good motor also jitters, the ESC is faulty. This swap test quickly differentiates between a dead motor winding and a dead ESC. Do not skip this step, even if you suspect timing, a motor that spins on a working ESC confirms the wiring is intact and the issue lies in the ESC's driver circuit or firmware.

When ESC timing is the hidden culprit

If the wiring is solid and the motor spins on another ESC, the issue may lie in the ESC's configuration or hardware. High-Kv motors (above 2300Kv) require higher timing to avoid desync. In your ESC configuration tool, read the settings and adjust the motor timing parameter if supported by your firmware. If your ESC supports throttle-based programming, consult its manual for the correct sequence to adjust timing. A mismatch here causes the ESC to lose synchronization with the motor's back EMF, resulting in the classic twitch-and-stop behavior. In a real build, timing is critical.

The case where the ESC is simply dead

When you have reflowed every solder joint, swapped motors to rule out windings, and tried all timing settings from Low to High, but the motor still stutters, the ESC has a blown MOSFET. This is a hardware failure that cannot be fixed by reconfiguring firmware. Look for a charred pad, a cracked IC, or a missing leg on one of the six MOSFETs. No amount of tinkering will revive a dead FET. Replace the ESC entirely. Budget for a spare ESC from the start to avoid downtime when this inevitable failure occurs.
