How To Save Games On PS5 When Your Solid State Drive Is Full

When your PS5 SSD is full, you can't save new game progress or install anything until you free up space, but the fix is simpler than you think. The error you're seeing isn't about your save files themselves (those are tiny); it's about the massive game install data that's clogging your internal drive, and you have four solid ways to clear it out.

Why your PS5 SSD full error stops you from saving

Your PS5 uses one internal SSD for everything: game installs, apps, media captures, and save data. Save files (your actual progress) are only a few megabytes each, but the console still needs available space to write them. Deleting or moving those is the only way to make room for both new titles and your precious progress.

Quick fix: Delete unused games and apps

The fastest way to resolve a PS5 SSD full situation is to remove games you're not currently playing. Here's exactly how:

  1. Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
  2. You'll see a list of everything installed, sorted by size (largest first).
  3. Press the Options button on any game you want to remove.
  4. Select Delete and confirm.

This instantly frees up space for saving progress or installing something new. Don't worry, you can re-download purchased games from your game library at any time, and your save data (unless you manually delete it separately) stays intact on the console.

Move PS5 games to USB extended storage

If you don't want to permanently delete games, moving them to a USB drive is your best bet. You'll need a commercially available USB drive that meets these requirements: SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later, 250 GB minimum, 8 TB maximum capacity. Note that you cannot connect it through a USB hub, and only one USB extended storage drive can be used at a time.

To set it up:

  1. Plug the USB drive into your PS5.
  2. Go to Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Format as USB Extended Storage. This wipes the drive, so back up anything important first.
  3. Once formatted, go to your Game Library, highlight a PS5 game, press the Options button, and select Move Games and Apps.

This is exactly how to play games on an external hard drive with your PS5, but with a catch: PS5 games stored on USB cannot be played directly from it. You must copy them back to internal storage or an M.2 SSD to launch them. The move is fast, but the copy-back takes time, so use this for games you're done with for now, not your current rotation.

Play PS4 games directly from external storage

Here's the workaround that saves you the copy-back hassle: PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage without any copying. This means you can keep your entire PS4 library on an external drive and run them straight from there, freeing up your internal SSD exclusively for PS5 titles. To move a PS4 game, follow the same steps as above, Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps, but when you select it, you'll see it can stay on USB and launch immediately. If you ever need to consolidate your collection, you can also transfer PS4 games from one external hard drive to another without re-downloading. This is the single best way to keep a massive library accessible without ever touching your internal storage.

Install an M.2 SSD for permanent extra space

For a long-term fix, install a compatible M.2 SSD inside your PS5. This gives you additional internal storage where PS5 games run at full speed, no copying required. The console supports commercially available M.2 SSDs that meet Sony's specifications (PCIe Gen4, 250 GB to 4 TB, with proper heatsink).

After installation, go to Settings > Storage > Installation Location and set the M.2 SSD as the default for new downloads. You can also move existing games there via Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps, choosing the Movable to M.2 SSD Storage tab. All game data for a specific title must stay in one place, you can't split a game between console storage and M.2, but this effectively doubles or quadruples your capacity, letting you keep more games installed and playable at full speed.

Back up save data with cloud storage

Before you delete or move anything, protect your progress. PlayStation Plus members can upload save data to cloud storage, so even if you remove a game, your progress is safe. Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, select Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4), then choose Upload. You can select individual saves or hit "Select All" to back everything up at once.

This is your safety net: once saves are in the cloud, you can confidently delete games to free up space, knowing that when you reinstall later, your progress will sync right back. For PS4 saves, you can also copy them to a USB drive as a local backup. Cloud storage doesn't solve the SSD full problem by itself, but it removes the fear of losing hours of gameplay when you do clear space.
