How to Add a Friend on Discord by Username
This is the primary method when you know someone's exact Discord username. The username must be entered exactly as it appears, including any discriminator tag.
Desktop or browser
- Press the Discord logo in the top-left corner of the window.
- Ensure the "Friends" tab is selected.
- Press the "Add Friend" button.
- Type or paste the exact username.
- Press "Send Friend Request."
Mobile
- Tap the chat bubble icon in the top-left corner, or tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner and then tap "Your Friends."
- Tap "Add Friends."
- Tap "Add by Username."
- Type or paste the exact username.
- Tap "Send Friend Request."
How to Add a Friend from Their Profile or a Server
When you encounter someone in a shared server or group chat, you can add them directly without needing their username. This is especially useful when playing Among Us with friends and crossplay, as you can quickly add people you meet during the game. - Click "Accept" to confirm.
You can also decline a request by clicking "Decline." The sender will not be notified of your decision.
Friend Request Limits and Privacy Settings
Your account can have a maximum of 1,000 accepted friends. For pending requests, you can have up to 1,500 incoming pending requests and up to 1,000 outgoing pending requests. If the incoming friend request limit is exceeded, the oldest pending requests are automatically removed until the count is back to 1,000.
You can control who can send you friend requests through your Privacy Settings. Available options include "Everyone," "Friends of Friends," or "Server Members." Users in regions with regional restrictions may receive safety alerts before accepting friend requests from unfamiliar accounts. Discord Support cannot manually add a friend for a user.
