If you originally signed up for YouTube Premium through an in-app purchase on your iPhone or iPad, you cannot change your payment method on YouTube’s website or app. You must manage your billing through your Apple ID settings instead. This is a critical warning because attempting to update your card on YouTube will not work-Apple controls the subscription, so open Settings on your iOS device, tap your name, then “Subscriptions,” and make your changes there. If you subscribed directly through YouTube (on a computer or Android device), the steps below apply to you, and you can similarly change payment method for Amazon music through its own website settings. Other streaming services like Amazon also route billing changes through the platform where you started the subscription, so you can change payment method on Amazon prime video directly if you signed up on their website.
How to change your YouTube Premium payment method on desktop
This is the fastest way to switch cards if you’re on a computer. You’ll see your current payment method and can replace it with a new one in under a minute.
- Go to YouTube.com/paid_memberships in your browser.
- Click “Manage membership.”
- Click “EDIT” next to your existing payment method.
- Click the down arrow next to your payment method.
- Select another payment method from the list, or choose “Add credit or debit card.”
- Enter your card number and the rest of the required details if you’re adding a new card.
- Click “SUBMIT” to save your changes.
Your new card will be charged for future YouTube Premium renewals immediately, there’s no waiting period.
How to change your YouTube Premium payment method on mobile
If you’re using the YouTube app on your phone or tablet, the process is nearly identical to desktop, just with taps instead of clicks. This is handy when you need to update your card while on the go, like when your current one expires mid-trip.
- Open the YouTube app and sign in to the account with your Premium subscription.
- Tap your profile photo in the top-right corner.
- Tap “Purchases and memberships.”
- Tap on your membership (it should say “YouTube Premium”).
- Tap “EDIT” next to your existing payment method.
- Tap the down arrow next to your payment method.
- Select your other payment method or tap “Add credit or debit card.”
- Enter your card details if adding a new card, then tap “SUBMIT.”
Make sure you’re on the latest version of the YouTube app, or the “EDIT” button might not appear.
How to change your backup payment method
Your backup payment method is used automatically if your primary card fails, for example, when it’s declined due to insufficient funds. Keeping this updated prevents a lapse in your Premium service, so you won’t suddenly lose ad-free viewing or background play.
- Go to YouTube.com/paid_memberships (desktop) or tap your profile photo then “Purchases and memberships” (mobile).
- Click or tap “EDIT” next to “Backup payment method.”
- Click or tap “Add credit or debit card.”
- Enter your card number and the required billing details.
- Click or tap “SUBMIT” to save it as your backup.
Your backup card will only be charged if your primary payment method can’t be processed, so you don’t need to worry about double billing.
How to remove an old payment method
You can’t remove a payment method directly from YouTube, that’s handled in Google Pay, not YouTube. This is useful when you want to delete an expired card or one tied to an old bank account, so it no longer appears as an option during checkout.
- Open Google Pay in your browser (pay.google.com) and sign in with the same Google account you use for YouTube Premium.
- Find the payment method you want to delete in the list.
- Click “Remove” for the payment method you would like to delete.
- Confirm the removal when prompted.
Once removed from Google Pay, the card will also disappear from your YouTube payment options. Note that if you remove the only card you have, YouTube will prompt you to add a new one before your next renewal date.
