To change default email in Safari, you need to adjust a macOS system-wide setting rather than a browser preference. Safari doesn't have its own email configuration; it always opens whatever email application macOS has designated as the default, and that setting lives inside the Apple Mail app.
Where the default email in Safari is actually set
Safari relies on the macOS system-wide default email app to handle every email link you click. When you tap a mailto: link on a webpage, Safari hands that link to whatever application the operating system has chosen. This means there is no browser-specific toggle to find, the control point is the Apple Mail app, even if you never use Mail for your actual correspondence. Understanding this distinction saves you from searching through Safari’s menus for a setting that doesn’t exist there.
Open Apple Mail to access the setting
You must launch the Mail app to reach the default email reader option, regardless of whether Mail is your primary email client. This is a required step because Apple has placed the system-wide default email setting inside Mail’s own preferences. Here’s what to do:
- Open the Mail app from your Dock, Applications folder, or Launchpad. It will launch even if you haven’t set up an account in it yet.
- From the menu bar at the top of the screen, click Mail.
- Choose Settings if you’re on macOS Ventura 13 or later (including Sonoma and Sequoia).

If the dropdown itself is grayed out, that means no email account is configured in Apple Mail at all. Why you can't set Gmail or Yahoo as the default
You might wonder why Gmail or Yahoo don’t show up in the list of options. The reason is that macOS requires a native application to handle the mailto: protocol, web-based email services that only run in a browser cannot be set as the default email reader. If you want to use Gmail or Yahoo as your default, you’ll need to install a dedicated desktop client for that service, such as the official Gmail app for Mac or a third-party client that supports your webmail account. Once such an app is installed and launched, it will appear in the Default email reader dropdown, and you can select it just like any other native email application.
