Before you begin, confirm your home Wi-Fi is a 2.4GHz network; Tantan Smart Plugs are not compatible with 5GHz Wi-Fi. Download the Smart Life app from the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android); this is the app used for all setup and control, not a Tantan-branded app. If you’re adding multiple devices, a consistent set up smart home plan now prevents mismatched routines later. The plug itself is rated for indoor use only, with a maximum load of 10A (100-240V), so verify your appliances fall within that limit.
Putting the plug into pairing mode
Plug the Tantan Smart Plug into a wall outlet. If you need AP Mode (for troubleshooting), press and hold the same button until the light blinks slowly instead, this tells the plug to create its own hotspot for a manual connection.
Adding the device in the Smart Life app (EZ Mode)
Open the Smart Life app and create an account if you're a new user, then log in. Tap the + button in the upper right corner, select Smart Plug or Electrical Outlet from the device list, and confirm that your plug's indicator light is rapidly blinking. Enter your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network name and password when prompted, then tap Confirm. The app will automatically search for and connect to the plug, this usually takes under a minute.
Troubleshooting: connecting using AP Mode
If EZ Mode fails (e.g., the app can't find the plug), switch to AP Mode. In the Smart Life app, select AP Mode instead of EZ Mode, and ensure the plug's light is slowly blinking (hold the button for 5 seconds to toggle between modes). This method is more reliable when your router has hidden SSIDs or strict firewall settings.
Naming and testing your plug
Once connected, customize the plug's name in the Smart Life app, for example, "Living Room Lamp" or "Coffee Maker", to make voice commands and scheduling easier to recognize. Test the plug by tapping the on/off button in the app; the connected appliance should respond immediately. Also verify remote control by switching from Wi-Fi to cellular data on your phone and toggling the plug again, if it works, your setup is complete.
Connecting the plug to Alexa or Google Home
To enable voice control, open the Alexa app (or Google Home app) and enable the Smart Life skill (or service). Link your Smart Life account credentials when prompted, then run Discover Devices in the Alexa or Google Home app, this will find your Tantan Smart Plug within about 20 seconds.
Resetting the Tantan Smart Plug
To reset the plug physically, press and hold the ON/OFF button for about 5 seconds until the indicator light blinks rapidly, this clears the Wi-Fi credentials and puts it back into pairing mode. For an app-based reset, open the Smart Life app, navigate to the plug's settings, and select Reset My Plug (or the equivalent option), then confirm the action to remove it from your account. A reset is useful if you change routers, sell the plug, or encounter persistent connection issues.
