To send an iMessage quietly, use the Gentle bubble effect or Invisible Ink, both deliver your message without a loud notification sound on the recipient’s phone. These built-in effects are ideal when someone is sleeping, in a meeting, or otherwise occupied, letting you stay in touch without disrupting them.
Send an iMessage quietly with the Gentle effect
The Gentle effect shrinks your message into a small, subtle bubble that appears on the recipient’s screen without any sound or banner alert. It’s the most straightforward way to send an iMessage quietly while still ensuring the message is seen when they glance at their phone.
- Open the Messages app and type your message as you normally would.
- Touch and hold the blue Send button (the upward-pointing arrow) until the “Send with Effect” screen appears.
- Make sure the “Bubble” tab is selected at the top of the screen.
- Tap “Gentle” from the list of bubble effects.
- Tap the Send button to deliver the message silently.
The recipient will see your text appear in a small, soft bubble that expands slowly, no sound, no vibration, no lock-screen notification. This works perfectly for a quick “thinking of you” or a late-night note without waking anyone up.
Send discreet content with 'Invisible Ink'
Invisible Ink takes quiet delivery a step further by hiding your message content under a shimmering blur until the recipient actively swipes to reveal it. This is useful when you want to send a sensitive detail or a personal photo without it being visible to anyone who happens to glance at the recipient’s screen.
- Open the Messages app and type your message or insert a photo.
- Ensure the “Bubble” tab is selected.
- Tap “Invisible Ink” from the list of bubble effects.
- Tap the Send button.
The recipient will see a blurred, animated patch in the conversation. They need to swipe their finger across it to reveal the text or image underneath. This adds an extra layer of privacy, even if their phone lights up with a silent notification, the actual content stays hidden until they choose to look.
Important notes for quiet iMessages
Both Gentle and Invisible Ink only work when you’re sending iMessages between Apple devices, that means blue message bubbles, not green SMS texts. If the recipient is on an Android phone or a non-Apple device, the effects won’t apply, and your message will arrive as a standard text with a normal notification sound.
Additionally, the recipient must be running iOS 10 or later to see these bubble effects. If they’re on an older version, the message will still be delivered, but it will appear as a regular iMessage without the quiet animation. For text formatting and other advanced effects, recipients need iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 11, or visionOS 2 or later, so check compatibility if you’re relying on a specific effect for discretion.
One more thing: if you want to keep your messaging activity private beyond just quiet delivery, you can hide conversations on iMessage by swiping left on a thread and selecting “Hide Alerts,” which silences all future notifications from that contact. And for time-sensitive content, you can send disappearing photo on iMessage using the same bubble effect menu, just choose “Invisible Ink” with a photo, and it will blur until swiped, then vanish after viewing. These tools work together to give you full control over how and when your messages are seen.
