What Is Kindle Unlimited?

Kindle Unlimited is Amazon’s ebook subscription service that gives you access to over two million ebooks, some audiobooks, and e-zines for free as part of your subscription. The subscription is paid, but the benefit is you can download as many as 10 titles at a time without paying for each of them.

You can read your Kindle Unlimited books on a Kindle reader, but you can download the free Kindle app if you do not own one. The app is compatible with iOS and Android mobile devices as well as Windows PC and MacBooks.

George Orwell’s dystopian sci-fi novel, 1984, is said to have predicted much of the things that are happening in today’s society. How Does Kindle Unlimited Subscription Work?

As mentioned, a Kindle Unlimited subscription gives you free access to millions of eBooks from the Kindle archives. However, to be upfront and transparent in this article, it’s important to note that it does not include all titles from the entire Amazon Kindle Library. You may find that some titles, especially extremely popular bestsellers, are only available for purchase. In some cases, the first book in a series may be available for free but not the sequel.

You also do not get to own the books. Technically, you are borrowing them and when your subscription ends, the books you downloaded will eventually be deleted from your device. You are allowed to download a maximum of 10 books at a time. There is no deadline for returning them but you cannot borrow more than 10 books simultaneously. So is it still worth paying for? Take a look at the details below so you can make an informed decision.

Finding Kindle Unlimited eBooks

finding books

As mentioned, not all Kindle books are available on Kindle Unlimited. To find out if a title is eligible to download for free with your subscription, you need to see if it has the Kindle Unlimited logo. It is written in yellow and black, and you will usually find it at the top of the book’s photo. Here are some ways you can get to the list of eligible books. You can do this both from a browser or the apps. It’s a bit different when browsing from a Kindle device and you will find a separate set of instructions for that below.

From a Browser

  1. Click on Kindle Books from the top menu on the home page then select Kindle eBooks.
  2. Scroll down and click on any category that you want to browse.
  3. Once there, tick on the checkbox from the left menu that says Kindle Unlimited Eligible.
  4. You will now see a list of all the eligible titles including some of the best books that you can download for free from Kindle Unlimited.

From Kindle Devices

Borrowing Titles

It’s simple to start downloading the best books on Kindle Unlimited from any device.

  1. Follow the steps above on finding eligible titles. Or you can search for the title that you want.
  2. If it’s eligible for free download or borrowing, tap on the book. Remember, it has to have the Kindle Unlimited logo on it.

  5. If you have both a Kindle reader and the apps, it will automatically sync so that it will be available on all of them.

Returning Titles

To return any of the 10 books you may have stored in your device, all you have to do is go to your library and select the Return option.

  1. From a web browser or the Amazon app (not the Kindle app), hover your mouse or tap on Accounts and Lists from the top menu, then click on Your Kindle Unlimited.
  2. Select Your Borrowed Items and it will display all the books you’ve downloaded.
  3. Beside each title, you will see two options: Read Now and Return.

Can I Lend My Kindle Unlimited eBooks?

If you know about Amazon’s household sharing feature, you may be wondering if your Kindle Unlimited content is also eligible for sharing with your family members in your account. The Kindle service, in general, also allows you to lend some of your eBooks to friends. Unfortunately, neither of the two programs allows you to lend your Kindle Unlimited books. The books in your devices are technically considered “borrowed” by you, so it’s not possible to lend them to others. However, you can give your friends and family a subscription to the service as a gift!

Giving Kindle Unlimited as a Gift

You can listen to the audiobook anytime using the free Audible app.

All things considered, is it worth paying for a Kindle Unlimited subscription? This depends on your reading habits and the kind of books you like to consume. As mentioned, not all titles are eligible for a free reading with the subscription. However, there are millions of titles to choose from and as you can see, we’ve included some of the best books you can find in the Kindle Unlimited library on the list above.

You may also want to consider your reading speed. How many books can you truly finish per month? Remember that you can borrow up to 10 books per month with your membership. To maximize the subscription, you must be able to read more than one book per month.

Here’s a clearer picture: most Kindle eBooks cost around $9.99 to $12.99 each. Subscription to the service is $9.99 per month. If you can read more than one book a month, you’ve already saved a lot! What more if you can read more than two? These are some of the things to keep in mind.

Canceling Your Subscription

How do you cancel your Kindle Unlimited subscription? If you find that the service is not for you, you can cancel your membership at any time. You will have access to your downloaded titles until the next billing date when your subscription ends.
