How to get podzol in Minecraft: what you need to know first
Podzol is a naturally generated block that cannot be crafted, smelted, or created through any in-game recipe. Unlike grass or mycelium, it does not spread to adjacent dirt, so you cannot "make" it by waiting. Your only way to obtain it in Survival mode is to locate it already generated in the world and collect it with the correct tool. The good news is that finding it is straightforward once you know which biome to search.
Step 1: Find a mega taiga (old growth pine taiga) biome
Podzol only generates in the mega taiga biome, now officially called the old growth pine taiga in newer versions of the game. You can identify this biome at a glance by its massive, towering spruce trees that are several blocks thick at the base. The ground is covered in a mix of podzol, coarse dirt, and regular dirt, often dotted with ferns and the occasional mossy cobblestone boulder. If you see tall ferns and giant spruce trunks, you are in the right place. Podzol appears as a brownish, layered dirt block with a darker, speckled top surface, making it stand out from the surrounding terrain.
Step 2: Get a shovel with Silk Touch
Silk Touch is a mandatory enchantment for collecting podzol. Without it, mining a podzol block will only drop a plain dirt block, which is useless for your purpose. To get Silk Touch, you can either enchant a shovel at an enchanting table (requiring levels and lapis lazuli) or search loot chests in dungeons, temples, mineshafts, or villages. A shovel is the fastest tool for the job, but any tool with Silk Touch will work, even a pickaxe or axe, as long as it has the enchantment. If you mine podzol without Silk Touch, you will simply get dirt, so do not bother trying until your tool is ready.
Step 3: Mine the podzol blocks
Once you have located a mega taiga and have your Silk Touch shovel equipped, simply walk up to any podzol block on the surface. These blocks are already placed in the world, you do not need to place dirt or do anything fancy. Left-click and hold to mine the block; it will break and drop itself as an item, which you can pick up and carry with you. Each block takes about a second to break with a shovel, and you can collect as many as you want. There is no crafting step involved; this is purely a mining-and-collecting task.
What you can (and can't) do with podzol
Podzol has a few unique properties that make it useful, but it also has limitations. You can plant mushrooms directly on podzol, and they will grow at any light level, even in complete darkness, which makes it ideal for mushroom farms. However, podzol does not spread to other dirt blocks like grass or mycelium do, so you cannot convert a large area into podzol by placing it next to dirt. You also cannot till podzol with a hoe to create farmland, so do not try to use it for crop farming. It is purely a decorative and mushroom-growing block.
Other ways to get podzol
If you are playing Minecraft Bedrock Edition, there is one alternative source: wandering traders. These rare NPCs sometimes offer podzol as part of their trade list, and you can buy it from them with emeralds. This is a handy option if you cannot find a mega taiga biome nearby or if you want podzol without going on a long expedition. However, this method is not available in Java Edition, where finding the biome and mining the blocks yourself is the only legitimate way to get podzol.
