To add a Visa gift card to Venmo, you must first register the card with a billing name and a US ZIP code on the card issuer's website, or Venmo will reject it. The critical prerequisite that the Visa gift card must have a billing name and US ZIP code registered with the card issuer, or Venmo will reject it. Unregistered gift cards without a name or ZIP code on file will typically fail when added to Venmo. Visit the card issuer's website, enter the card number, and provide your name and a valid US ZIP code. Venmo is a US-only app, requiring a US phone number, US bank account, and US-verified identity to create an account, so the ZIP code must match a US address. How to add a Visa gift card to Venmo in 5 steps
The following steps use the current Venmo app interface. Follow them exactly to add your Visa gift card successfully.
Step 1: Open the Venmo app and go to your Wallet
Navigate to the correct section by tapping the 'Me' tab and then the 'Wallet' section, which replaces the old 'Menu' and 'Payment Methods' path. Tap it, then tap 'Wallet' near the top of the screen.
Step 2: Tap 'Add a bank or card' and choose 'Card'
Initiating the process to add a new payment method and selecting the card option. From the options that appear, tap 'Card.'
Step 3: Enter your Visa gift card details carefully
Inputting the 16-digit card number, expiration date, CVV, and the registered billing ZIP code exactly as they appear on the card issuer's site. Enter the card number from the front of the card, the expiration date, and the three-digit CVV from the back. In the ZIP code field, enter the ZIP code you used when registering the card on the issuer's website. Double-check every digit before proceeding.
Step 4: Confirm the card and set it as your default payment method
Finalizing the addition and optionally setting the gift card as the primary payment method for future transactions. Tap 'Add' or 'Confirm' to add the card. If you prefer to use it only for specific transactions, you can leave another card or bank account as your default and choose the gift card per transaction.
Why was my Visa gift card declined on Venmo?
If your card was declined, it could be due to issues from the card issuer or Venmo for reasons like funds availability or fraud prevention. First, confirm the card is registered with a name and ZIP code. If it is, check the balance, the card must have enough funds to cover the transaction. Venmo limits the number of cards that can be added to an account, typically to 4 cards, and this limit cannot be increased. If you already have four cards, you must remove one before adding the gift card. Finally, the card issuer or Venmo may block the addition as a fraud prevention measure. In that case, contact the card issuer's customer service to authorize the Venmo transaction. Venmo does not offer its own branded gift cards for purchase; however, you can send digital gift cards for specific retailers through the Venmo app. If you need to identify your account for support, your Venmo handle is your unique username that others use to find and pay you.
