To pay someone with my Venmo balance, open the Venmo app, tap "Pay or Request," find the recipient, enter the amount, and confirm that your Venmo balance is the funding source before tapping "Pay." Your balance will be used automatically for the full payment amount, but only if your identity is verified and your balance covers the entire transaction. If you’re sending money to someone you no longer wish to interact with, you can block someone on Venmo after the payment is complete. If the payment fails despite having sufficient funds, here's why won't Venmo let me pay someone.
What you need to pay someone with your Venmo balance
Before you can use your Venmo balance to send money, you must have verified your identity within the app. Venmo requires identity verification before allowing anyone to use funds held in their Venmo account for payments. If you haven’t completed this step, you can still receive payments and transfer those funds to a linked bank account, but you cannot use the money in your Venmo account to pay someone until your identity is confirmed.
Check your Venmo balance before you pay
Knowing your available balance is the first step to paying with it. Open the Venmo app and look at the home screen; your available Venmo balance appears prominently at the top. This number tells you exactly how much you can send right now. If the amount you want to pay is larger than your balance, Venmo will not pull from your balance for the full payment, it will use another funding source instead. So, confirm your balance covers the full amount before you start a payment.
Pay someone with your Venmo balance
Once you’ve confirmed your balance is sufficient, follow these steps to send money using your Venmo balance:
- Open the Venmo app on your smartphone and log in to your account.
- Tap "Pay or Request" at the bottom of the screen.
- Search for the recipient by their username, name, phone number, email, or by scanning their QR code. You can also enter their Venmo handle directly in the "To" field.
- Enter the amount you want to send.
- Add a note describing what the payment is for, such as "Dinner last night" or "Rent share."
- Review the payment details, including the recipient, amount, and the funding source shown. If your Venmo balance covers the entire payment, the amount will be pulled from your balance automatically.
- Tap "Pay" to send the money.
The key rule is that Venmo uses your balance only if it covers the full payment amount. If your balance is less than the total, Venmo will draw the difference from a linked bank account or card instead. Also, double-check that you selected the right person before tapping Pay, because Venmo payments are designed to move quickly and cannot be easily reversed.
Verify your payment went through
After you tap Pay, confirm that the transaction was processed correctly. Open the activity tab, represented by a clock icon at the bottom of the app. Scroll through your recent activity to find the payment you just made. Tap on it to see the full details: the recipient’s information, the amount, the date, and the payment status. If it shows as "Completed," the funds have been successfully transferred to the recipient’s Venmo account. You can also check your Venmo balance on the home screen to confirm that the exact amount was deducted from your balance, not from a linked bank account or card. This verification step ensures your payment used your Venmo balance as intended and that no unexpected funding source was charged.
