How block breaking and placing works
In Adventure Mode, players cannot directly destroy most blocks with any tools or place any blocks to prevent modification of adventure maps. In Java Edition, blocks can only be destroyed with an item or tool that has the CanDestroy NBT tag, and cannot be broken by hand. However, you can still interact with blocks that have an interface, such as chests, dispensers, crafting tables, furnaces, and brewing stands, so you can open loot, craft items, and use mechanics as the map designer planned.
How to switch to adventure mode
To switch to Adventure Mode, the /gamemode adventure command is typically used. Type it in the chat window (press T) and hit enter. This instantly changes your game mode, enabling the restricted gameplay that custom maps require. You can also switch back to Survival or Creative with /gamemode survival or /gamemode creative when you're done.
Adventure mode vs survival and creative
Adventure mode is for curated experiences, not free building (Creative) or resource gathering/survival (Survival). In Survival, you mine blocks, fight mobs, and manage hunger; in Creative, you have infinite resources and can fly. Adventure strips away those freedoms so you can focus purely on the map's objectives. If you want to play a story-driven quest or a puzzle-filled map without accidentally breaking something, adventure mode is the ideal choice.
A quick note on older Minecraft versions
In Minecraft version 1.4.2 ("Pretty Scary Update"), Adventure Mode allowed players to break blocks using the correct tools without requiring special commands or NBT tags; modern versions (1.8 and later) require specific CanDestroy NBT tags. This explains why some old maps behave differently: if you try to play a pre-1.8 map on a modern version, you may find you can't break blocks even with the right tool, because the map wasn't built with the tag system. Map makers now include those tags on tools to let you break certain blocks, keeping the adventure intact.
