How To Know If PS5 Controller Is Charging

how-to-know-if-ps5-controller-is-charging

To know if your PS5 controller is charging, look for the PS5 controller charging light: a slow, pulsing orange light bar on the controller itself. This orange pulse confirms active charging, and the light bar turns off when the battery is full.

How the PS5 controller charging light tells you it's working

The fastest way to confirm your DualSense is charging is to glance at the light bar on the top edge of the controller. When connected to a power source, the light bar slowly blinks or pulses orange. This pulsing orange light is your clear visual cue that charging is underway. Once the controller reaches a full charge, the light bar turns off completely, which typically happens after about three hours, see typical PlayStation controller charging time. There is no white light or other color; the absence of the orange pulse means the battery is full.

Check the charging status on your PS5 console

You can also verify charging directly on your PS5 screen. Press the PlayStation button on the controller to open the Control Center. Navigate to the Accessories section, and you will see a battery icon with bars indicating the charge level. While the controller is actively charging, that battery icon will animate or display a lightning bolt symbol. If the animation doesn’t appear, you may need to charge PlayStation controller using a different cable or power source. When the controller is fully charged, the icon stops animating and shows a solid, full battery.

Connect your controller to a power source

To begin charging, physically connect your DualSense to a compatible power source. The controller uses a USB-C port at its top. You can plug it into your PS5 console using a USB-C cable, a computer, other USB devices, or a reputable 5V USB wall charger. An official DualSense Charging Station is also an option, which takes approximately 3 hours to charge one or two controllers from empty. Crucially, you must use a USB cable that supports both charging and data transfer. A cable that only carries power cannot charge the controller because it lacks the data line needed for the charging protocol.

Enable charging in rest mode

To keep your controller charging even when the console is off, you need to adjust a setting. Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Under Supply Power to USB Ports, choose one of these options:

  1. Always: The USB ports supply power whenever the PS5 is in rest mode, regardless of how long it has been asleep.
  2. 3 Hours: Power is supplied for only three hours after the console enters rest mode.
  3. Adaptive: Available on CFI-2000 model group consoles. This adjusts the charging time based on the controller's remaining battery level before rest mode, so it charges only as long as needed.

Selecting "Always" or "3 Hours" ensures your controller will charge when the console is resting.

Troubleshooting: Why is my PS5 controller not charging?

If your controller isn't charging, start with the cable. Ensure you are not using a power-only cable; switch to one that supports both power and data. Next, check the physical connection: the USB-C plug should be fully inserted into both the controller and the power source, with no debris or obstruction in the port. If the connection is secure, test a different power source, try another USB port on the PS5, a different wall adapter, or a computer. A faulty power source or a loose connection is a common cause. If none of these steps work, the issue may be with the controller itself, and you should contact Sony support for further assistance.
