Before you download LeapStart companion audio: what you’ll need

To download LeapStart companion audio, you’ll need a computer running Windows or macOS, the LeapFrog Connect application, a LeapFrog Parent Account, and a high-speed internet connection. The process uses your computer to transfer the audio files to your LeapStart player, so you won’t need to download anything directly to the device itself.

Before you begin, check that your computer meets the system requirements. For PCs, that means a Pentium 4 or equivalent processor (2 GHz or faster recommended), 1 GB of RAM, 500 MB of free disk space, and a monitor resolution of 1024 x 768. For Macs, you’ll need an Apple computer with a 1 GHz processor or faster recommended. You’ll also need a LeapFrog Parent Account, if you don’t have one yet, create it on the LeapFrog website before proceeding. Finally, make sure your internet connection is stable and fast enough to download audio files, as a slow or interrupted connection can cause issues.

Step 1: Install the LeapFrog Connect application

The LeapFrog Connect application is the official software that manages the transfer of companion audio from your computer to your LeapStart player. Without it, the player cannot receive the audio files it needs to function with your books. This application is available for both PC and Mac, and you’ll need to download and install it before connecting your LeapStart player.

To install, go to the LeapFrog website and locate the LeapFrog Connect download section. Download the installer file for your operating system, then run it and follow the on-screen instructions. The installation process is straightforward, just accept the terms, choose your installation folder, and wait for the software to finish installing. Once it’s done, launch the LeapFrog Connect application and sign in with your LeapFrog Parent Account credentials.

Step 2: Activate the audio download on your LeapStart player

Before you connect your LeapStart player to the computer, you need to activate the audio download for each book you own. This is a crucial step that many parents miss, and skipping it is the most common reason why the companion audio doesn’t download. The LeapStart player only requests audio for books that have been “touched” with the stylus pen.

To activate a book, turn on your LeapStart player and use the stylus pen to touch an inside page of the book, any page will work, but it should be a page that contains interactive content. When you do this, the player will recognize the book and prompt you to connect it to the computer to download the companion audio. If you have multiple books, you’ll need to touch each one individually, one at a time, before connecting the player to your computer. This ensures that the player knows exactly which audio files to request.

Step 3: Connect your LeapStart player to your computer

Once you’ve touched the stylus to each book you want to download, it’s time to connect your LeapStart player to your computer. Use the included USB cable to plug the player into an available USB port on your computer. Make sure the cable is securely connected at both ends, a loose connection can prevent the LeapFrog Connect application from recognizing the player.

When you connect the player, the LeapFrog Connect application should launch automatically. If it doesn’t, open the application manually. The software will then detect your LeapStart player and automatically locate, download, and install the companion audio files for any books you’ve touched with the stylus. This process may take a few minutes, depending on the number of books and the speed of your internet connection. Do not disconnect the player while the download is in progress, wait until the application confirms that the audio files have been successfully installed.

Troubleshooting LeapStart companion audio downloads

If the download doesn’t start or you run into issues, there are a few things to check. First, make sure you actually touched the stylus to an inside page of each book before connecting the player to your computer. If you skipped this step, the player won’t request the audio, and the LeapFrog Connect application will have nothing to download. Go back and touch the stylus to the book, then reconnect the player.

If the connection isn’t working, try a different USB port or cable. Some computers have USB ports that don’t provide enough power or data transfer for the player. Also, make sure the LeapStart player is turned on and has sufficient battery power, if the battery is too low, the player may not communicate properly with the computer. Check that the LeapFrog Connect application is up to date, as older versions may have compatibility issues with newer operating systems.

Finally, verify that you’re signed in to your LeapFrog Parent Account within the LeapFrog Connect application. If you’re not signed in, the software won’t be able to download the audio files. If you’ve tried all these steps and the download still isn’t working, double-check that your internet connection is stable and that no firewall or security software is blocking the LeapFrog Connect application from accessing the internet. In most cases, the issue is either a missed stylus touch or a connection problem, both of which are easy to fix.
