A private Among Us lobby can host a minimum of 4 players and a maximum of 15 players. The host can start the game once the 4-player minimum is met.
The one among us lobby size rule every other guide gets wrong
The private lobby player count in Among Us is not a suggestion, a recommendation, or a flexible range that changes based on your platform. The game’s code enforces a strict minimum of 4 players and a hard maximum of 15 players in every private lobby, and no official setting, menu toggle, or cross-platform feature can change that.
The 4-player minimum
Among Us requires at least four players in a private lobby before the host can click the "Start Game" button. This minimum exists because the game’s core mechanics, a crewmate completing tasks and an impostor sabotaging, break down with fewer participants. If you try to start a private lobby with only two or three players, the game will display an error message indicating that at least 4 players are needed to start. The lobby itself remains open, but the start button is grayed out until the fourth person joins. This rule applies to both the host and any friends they invite, ensuring the round has enough bodies for meaningful deception and voting. You can easily fill those slots by playing Among Us with friends and crossplay, since cross-platform support lets you invite people on PC, mobile, and consoles into the same private lobby.
The 15-player cap
The hard maximum for any private Among Us lobby is 15 players. This cap is built into the game’s code and cannot be exceeded through normal settings. If a 16th player attempts to join a private lobby that is already full, they will see an error indicating the lobby is full and will be unable to enter. The host’s "Player Limit" slider in the lobby settings will not allow a value above 15, and the lobby list will show a "15/15" count once the cap is reached. This limit ensures server stability and balanced gameplay, as the game’s map sizes and task counts are designed around a maximum of 15 participants.
Why 5 and 10 are common numbers
Many players see references to 5 or 10 players when they add a friend on Among Us or read about optimal impostor ratios. These numbers are not lobby limits but recommended player counts for balanced games. For example, a lobby of 5 players typically allows 1 impostor, while a lobby of 10 players can support 2 impostors. The game’s settings menu lets the host adjust the number of impostors based on total players, and the default recommendations often suggest 1 impostor for 5 players and 2 for 10. When you enable crossplay on Among Us for Xbox, these same ratios apply across platforms, but the lobby itself still accepts any number between 4 and 15. Similarly, if you want to play with friends in Among Us, you might aim for 5 or 10 players for a fair game, but the actual lobby cap remains 15.
When the answer is different
The default limits of 4 to 15 players apply to the official, unmodified version of Among Us on all platforms, including PC, mobile, and consoles. However, modded clients or older versions of the game may have different limits. For instance, some custom server mods allow lobbies with up to 20 or even 50 players, but these are unofficial and break the game’s balance. The original 2018 release of Among Us had a lower cap of 10 players before an update raised it to 15. If you play Among Us in real life with physical props and no digital lobby, the minimum and maximum are entirely up to your group’s rules, there is no software cap. For the official digital game, always expect a hard ceiling of 15 players and a firm floor of 4. Any claim of a 16th player joining is either a mod or a misunderstanding of the lobby settings.
