It is finally coming to Nintendo Switch for its long-awaited remake for both loyal fans and new gamers. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is the official title of the remake series from the classic Game Boy Advance. With an all-new soundtrack and graphics, Re-Boot Camp will offer nostalgic feels among Advance Wars aficionados.

As the title describes, this Re-Boot Camp will highlight two campaigns. The game will include five different divisions, namely Black Hole, Green Earth, Yellow Comet, Blue Moon, and Orange Star. Each division has its own Commanding Officers (COs) with its very own capabilities. Each specialty includes powerful abilities as well as passive bonuses. A maximum of four players can also compete in the online multiplayer gaming mode.

Although Intelligent Systems has been its long-time developer, the company will no longer work with the remake. Instead, WayForward will be responsible for all of the game’s remakes. In case you didn’t know, Intelligent Systems is also preoccupied with the all-new WarioWare: Get It Together! WayForward’s portfolio has a reputable set of games. Therefore, there is assurance for the fans that the game developer is highly reliable enough to handle its long-awaited remaster. Fans can also anticipate that the franchise is reverting to its golden era, eliminating the tense Days of Ruin.

Looking Back: History of Advance Wars

In 2001, it was launched on the Game Boy Advance (GBA) and was initially created by Intelligent Systems. The game describes the story of the Orange Star nation, entangled in a conflict with its neighboring faction, Blue Moon as well as the succeeding involvement of nearby regions Green Earth and Yellow Comet.

Players must win every turn-based strategy tournament either by controlling the opponent’s headquarters or by eliminating every enemy’s unit on the map.

In 2003, Intelligent Systems also released its sequel, Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising. Although it features its own distinct storyline, Black Hole Rising’s gameplay mechanics are similar to its predecessor. However, it has more Commanding Officers (COs) to manage, with 19 compared to the first Advance Wars’ 11 COs.

Nintendo’s Advance Wars series traces back to the late 80s, with Famicom Wars launched in Japan’s Famicom. Other editions were launched on the Game Boy Color, Game Boy, and Super Famicom. However, it wasn’t until the game went to the Game Boy Advanced system that it became officially available for Western countries.

Two succeeding sequels, namely Advance Wars: Dual Strike, and Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, were launched respectively on the Nintendo DS platform in 2005 and 2008. That said, remakes were already available that mark the first arrival of the series in 13 years.

Launched during Nintendo’s E3 2021 Showcase, it will have its long-awaited remake with a more modernized look and gameplay. Gamers will lead the Orange Star Army into turn-based battles across a diverse range of battlegrounds. You will also be conquering opponent’s armies, seizing towns, and utilizing specialized Commanding Officer capabilities distinct to every Commander.

Andy’s capability, for instance, will allow him to restore units while Sami enhances the capabilities of your forces. Your enemies will also have their own capabilities and it will boil down to you on discovering how to counterattack them. Once overpowered, you will initiate them into combat in the game’s Versus Mode and fight other opponents.

As mentioned, the remake involves the first Advance Wars and the Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising campaigns into one package. Hence, the official name Advance Wars 1+2. The setting will retain the sprite aesthetic from the previous versions; however, the characters are in 3D graphics.

When units are currently in action, the quality of animation has a charming appeal. Hence, the remake adheres to its mantra “from the ground up.” Although the remake won’t be as colorful as Breath of the Wild 2, it’s promising to know that Nintendo hasn’t disregarded the beauty of old franchises.

With it, fans can anticipate plenty of new characters. If this is the case, its description will capture your heart. In summary, the description goes like this:

Players can command an army in turn-based, strategic battles as a deliberate advisor for the Orange Star Army. Your capability is in need as you transport naval, air, and land units across the battleground, releasing formidable Commanding Office capabilities to change the course of battle. Conquer opponent squads and seize numerous towns and units to maintain peace and order as well as secure triumph. Players are also expected to be mindful of the game-changing weather patterns and terrains as they lead units across two unique campaigns.
