How Long Can An Instagram Poll Question And Answers Be

Instagram poll limits are strict: poll questions and answer options each have character limits that, if exceeded, may cause truncation. Anything beyond those limits gets silently cut off with an ellipsis, so you must fit within them to preserve your full text. If you are creating a poll on Instagram, these are the exact boundaries you must respect before your Story goes live.

Instagram poll limits: the exact character caps

Tap the poll sticker in Instagram Stories. The question field accepts up to a set number of characters. Each of the two default answer options, you can swap out the default “Yes” and “No”, is limited to a set number of characters. Instagram enforces these limits at the server level, not just in the text input field. There is no workaround. Pasting text that exceeds these counts will be truncated when the Story is published, even if the creation screen momentarily shows the full string. The question character limit includes spaces and punctuation. Every character counts. The character limit applies per option; if you add more than two options via the “Add option” button, each additional option also follows the same rule. If the sticker itself is unresponsive, the issue might be unrelated to text limits, as detailed for the Instagram poll sticker greyed out even with a photo added scenario.

What happens when you go over

Instagram does not display a red error or a character counter when you type beyond the limits. It silently truncates. The text gets cut with an ellipsis (…) at the cutoff point. For a question, this means your carefully worded prompt might become “Why do users ignore our...?” instead of “Why do users ignore our new feature announcement?”. For an answer option, text that exceeds the limit may be cut off with an ellipsis. This truncation can break the poll’s intent. Viewers see an incomplete question or indistinguishable answer choices, leading to skewed responses or confusion. The ellipsis appears only after the Story is published. You see the full text during editing, but your audience sees the cut version. Book a test now: publish the Story, then check it immediately from a separate account to confirm the truncation. If you are wondering why your poll results seem off, that single check is your answer, though a similar visibility issue can occur when Instagram poll results hidden after highlights vanish from your archived stories.

Why your poll preview still looks fine

The most common trap is that the poll creation screen inside Instagram Stories shows your full text without any visual warning. When you type beyond the limit into the question field, the text scrolls normally and no ellipsis appears. You tap “Your Story,” and the preview thumbnail also appears to show the entire question. Only after the Story goes live do viewers see the truncated version. This happens because Instagram’s editor renders text in a flexible container, but the published Story applies a strict character limit. Skip the in-app preview entirely. The audio does not affect the text limit, but the misleading preview remains. To avoid this, count characters manually in a notes app before pasting. Truncation cannot be fixed retroactively. Use the main entrance, the sticker tray, not a third-party tool, because only the native sticker reveals the true cutoff behavior.

The only way to verify truncation before your audience sees it is to publish the Story and immediately view it from a separate, unlinked Instagram account, because the creator’s editing screen and preview thumbnail always show the full, uncut text.
