What Is The Rarest Block In Minecraft

what-is-the-rarest-block-in-minecraft

The rarest block in Minecraft is the Dragon Egg, a one-of-a-kind trophy that only appears after you defeat the Ender Dragon. Because it spawns just once per world in Java Edition (and twice in Bedrock Edition), it holds the title of the rarest block in Minecraft by a wide margin, no other block is so strictly limited by a single boss fight.

How to get the Dragon Egg in survival mode

Getting the Dragon Egg requires you to beat the Ender Dragon first. That means finding a stronghold, activating the End portal, and surviving the boss fight. Once the dragon falls, the egg appears on top of the exit portal frame in the center of the End island.

You can’t just mine it like a normal block. The egg teleports away whenever you directly break it, so you need a trick to collect it. Here’s the reliable method that works in both Java and Bedrock:

  1. Defeat the Ender Dragon and locate the Dragon Egg on the portal frame.
  2. Dig a two-block-deep hole directly beneath the egg, and place a torch or slab at the bottom of that hole.
  3. Break the block supporting the egg (or push it with a piston) so it falls onto the torch or slab.
  4. Because the egg lands on a non-full block, it doesn’t teleport, it turns into an item you can pick up.

If you prefer the piston method, simply place a sticky piston next to the egg and activate it. The piston pushes the egg off the portal frame, and you can collect it before it has a chance to teleport away. Either approach works, but the torch/slab trick is the most common because it requires no redstone.

Why the Dragon Egg is so rare

The Dragon Egg’s rarity comes down to its spawn conditions. It is not generated anywhere in the world, not found in chests, and not craftable. It drops only once per world from the first Ender Dragon defeat, and in Java Edition, that means exactly one egg per world, forever. Bedrock Edition gives you two eggs per world, but that’s still a finite, non-renewable supply. Once you collect it, you can never get another one through normal gameplay. That makes it a true trophy block: a symbol of conquering the game’s final boss, and a possession that no other player on your world can ever duplicate.

Other Minecraft blocks you can’t obtain in survival mode

The Dragon Egg isn’t the only block that’s impossible to get through normal survival play. Several other blocks exist in the game but are locked behind Creative mode, commands, or special mechanics. Here are the most notable ones:

Barrier Blocks

Barrier Blocks are invisible, solid blocks used by map makers to create invisible walls. They can only be obtained in Creative mode or by using commands, such as `/give @p Minecraft:barrier`, and they never appear naturally in any world. If you want to build an invisible floor or a no-entry zone in your map, this is the block you’d use, but you’ll never find one while mining.

Command Blocks

Command Blocks are specialized blocks that execute commands when powered by redstone. They do not generate naturally in any Minecraft dimension, and they cannot be obtained or edited in Survival mode without cheats. If you’re designing custom adventures or automated systems, Command Blocks are essential, but they exist entirely outside the survival experience.

Infested Blocks

Infested Blocks look like normal stone, cobblestone, or stone bricks, but they spawn Silverfish when broken. They are not collectible in survival mode, even with a Silk Touch enchantment. When you mine an Infested Block with Silk Touch, it drops the normal, non-infested version of the block instead. So you can’t take one home, no matter how careful you are.

Monster Spawners

Monster Spawners are the cage-like blocks found in dungeons, mineshafts, and strongholds that continuously spawn mobs. They cannot be obtained in survival mode; when broken, they drop experience orbs even with Silk Touch. If you want a spawner for your own mob farm, you’ll need to build around it in place, you can never pick it up and move it.

How rare are pink sheep and other oddities?

While the Dragon Egg is the rarest block, players often wonder about naturally spawning oddities like pink sheep. You can breed two pink sheep together, or even dye normal sheep pink, so their rarity is temporary. The Dragon Egg, by contrast, is permanently finite. But remember: no matter how lucky you get with pink sheep, you’ll never find another Dragon Egg once you’ve claimed yours.
