How to grow jungle trees in Minecraft: the essentials

Jungle trees come in two distinct forms: small 1x1 trees and massive 2x2 giants. This guide covers how to grow jungle trees in Minecraft, including obtaining saplings, choosing the right spot, space requirements for both tree types, and using bonemeal to speed things up.

How to get jungle saplings

To start growing jungle trees, you first need jungle saplings. These drop from jungle tree leaves when you break them, or naturally as leaves decay. The most reliable method is to find a naturally generated jungle biome, then break leaf blocks from the tall trees you find there. Each leaf block has a chance to drop a sapling, so clearing a few trees usually gives you plenty to work with.

Where to plant jungle saplings

Jungle saplings can be planted on dirt, coarse dirt, grass blocks, podzol, rooted dirt, or moss blocks. In Java Edition, they also grow on mycelium and farmland. You don't need water nearby, jungle trees grow fine without any water source. However, good lighting from sunlight or torches helps prevent hostile mobs from spawning near your saplings while you wait for them to grow.

How to grow a small (1x1) jungle tree

Planting a single jungle sapling will produce a small tree. For it to grow successfully, you need a 3x3 empty space at the base and at least five blocks of air directly above the sapling. The tree also needs a 5x5 area at the top of its trunk for the leaves to spread out. If the space is too tight, the sapling won't grow. Small jungle trees sometimes grow into "bush" variants that stay only a few blocks tall, which is normal behavior.

How to grow a large (2x2) jungle tree

To grow a giant jungle tree, you must plant four jungle saplings together in a 2x2 square formation on the same level. All four saplings must be jungle saplings, this was patched in Minecraft 1.2.4, so mixing in other sapling types won't work. Place them in a perfect square, then clear the area around them. The tree needs a 3x3 clear area at the base and a 5x5 column of unobstructed space at least 11 blocks above the saplings (12 blocks including the saplings themselves) for maximum height. This column is centered on the northwestern sapling. Large jungle trees can reach 30-32 blocks tall, so make sure you have vertical room.

How to speed up growth with bonemeal

Applying bonemeal to any jungle sapling, or to any one of the four saplings in a large tree setup, significantly accelerates growth. A single bonemeal application can trigger the tree to grow almost instantly, saving you the time of waiting for natural growth. This works for both small and large trees, so you can bonemeal one sapling in the 2x2 square to get your giant tree right away.

How to harvest your jungle tree

Once your jungle tree has fully grown, use an axe to chop down the jungle wood and collect the vines that hang from the canopy. Jungle wood is useful for crafting various items, including sticks, tools, and decorative building blocks. Vines serve as a decorative block for building projects or can be climbed like ladders. Harvesting a large jungle tree yields a substantial amount of wood, making it a worthwhile investment of your saplings.
