I am a 46 yr old medically retired (100% service-connected disabled Vietnam-era veteran) incomplete quadripelegic. I was a senior LAN analyst in charge of all networking, pc tech, software evaluation, and user training in my last position. I have some programming experience (FOCUS, DBase, SQL, VB, and a familliarization with C)and hardware experience to the pc-component level. I am fairly strong with 3D modeling using NURBS objects and MIDI programming. I have always been totally keen on robotics but have just recently decided to actually get involved. I am starting at an extremely low level with (please don't laugh - yet) the Lego Mindstorm Robotic Invention System (ok - you can laugh now!). I have built several small robots my favorite being "Cat-chaser Bot". A little bot I came up with to keep my kitty on her toes... using video recognition via an attached computer controlled web cam, CC Bot would watch for kitty, when it found her it would follow her (in a specific area dictated by the cable length) and if it got with-in 6 feet - it threw a sponge at her. This act of obvious aggression did not amuse kitty at all - I had to rebuild CC Bot after each successful toss... I would like to get involved in more serious robotics with an eye toward developing "smart" wheelchair accessories and "affordable" intelligent wheelchairs. I've got a short budget, but a long time and an equally long vision. Any suggestions or guidance on how and where to actually start towards serious robotics would be tremendously appreciated!!!
