Mars Scorpion Robot?

Posted 10 Mar 2001 at 05:28 UTC by The Swirling Brain Share This

Space.com has an article about a Scorpion Robot under their space age gadegets section and yet more about Mark Tilden of Solarbotics fame. The development team's goal is to make robots that can navigate mars. They want to prove that robots can survive for days.
Here's a cool pic of the scorpion robot. I thought that the Mars Pathfinder and Sojourner already proved that robots can survive for days even on another planet? Anyway, check out the pic, it looks cool even if the robot was a little nervous. :-) Is it me or do Mark's robots all seem to do the same thing? Anyway, the article has plenty of robotics hype. There are new robotic terms like "Q-learning method" and sensational phrases like "new life on mars" and "military robots taking over the world someday". You have to hand it to Mark, he's a real salesman!

Looks like most of the hype was coming from the space.com correspondent that wrote the article. But my reading of the article is that the BAM guys are taking the opposite approach from Tilden. Mark advocates biomorphic bots with no CPU or software and the Scorpian is a biomemetic bot like the ones we're used to. Either way, I'm always impressed with anything that has 8 legs and manages to walk...
