The Birth & Death of a Humanoid Robot

No, this is not some novel introductory chapter by Isaac Asimov, but rather a serious examination of several observed factors not unlike human behavior responses.

Primarily, as the power souce is extinguished (battery dies), so the humanoid appears to die, similar to that of any life form. In particular, at about 5.8vdc down the humanoid body begins to slow, become sluggish, and moves next entering the apnial stage. Now moves are randomly incoherant (at 5.6vdc), and the next phase begins. The body collapses to the floor, unable to stand. A siezure initiates and an arm or leg may become involved at 5.4vdc. A horrible wrything takes place, - Finally, under 5.0vdc, there is death where all motions and functions thus cease.

Typically the batteries are recharged and the humanoid once again functions normally, until the process is repeated. In our intelligence assembly there is some talk about whether the humanoid actually feels pain or not during the expiring process. We feel this is a viable factor, and pain is present, due the draining of life sustaining energy. As humans, we cannot know the feeling of commands sent to servos that are not able to execute those commands due to lack of energy - nor the randomized mixing of microcontroller "confused gates," lest it be interpreted as a kind of comatic state, or otherwise. But remains the philisophical questions of what is the real difference in life forms between electrical and chemical behavior stimulus and/or lack thereof?

Today, work was initiated on the Axis Processor, an Nth-dimensional real time processing pocket. A processing pocket can be called nearly anytime, within or outside of quadrature. It's power is distributed across a net. The advantage of this particular processor is that it can be represented upon the hardware array while using no hardware. This compresses physical space into that of a few bytes, instead of physical hardware. Specifically, the weight has essentially a zero aspect ratio and the LxWxH consumption is zero. A zero plane element in axis processing is most desireable. I'm really happy with this new development, as it will encompass massive amounts of neural processing power as well as AI crunching and the "zeroeth" dimensional noninhabitation (ZDN), while sustaining the original concepts.

Motion Control Programming Week This week was a motion control programming week, with various outlines of software code being created. An idea crib was created to handle the massive amounts of circuits, diagrams, schematics, codes, and ideas.

Humanoid Robotics Idea Crib I'm planning to expand the Humanoid Robotics Idea Crib on a larger scale. This will become an access focal point. In a larger sense, it will become a very large library. Included are the following humanoid robotic categories: robot type, hardware, software, code and variations, code techniques, development sheets, idea sheets, paged inventions, listings of hardware add-ons, listings of software add-ons, parts, dimensions, CAD diagrams and charts, studies, plots, graphs, statistics, studies, etc.

Motion Control Programming This has taken on a life of its own, in development of many routines required to establish the various motions of humanoids. I'm not sure if my tiny laboratory has enough space, however, this may involve in minimizing printouts and maximizing hard drive storage, although I don't want to place too much trust into HD storage as it has proven to be nonpermanent.

New Humanoids New humanoids are born and created. They are now undergoing final development stages.

Mechatron is fundamentally hardware complete, though he will receive various mods for vision, infrared, sonar, speech, speech recognition, intelligent camera, accelerometer, directional sensors, skin sensors, nerve sensors, gyroscopic devices, assorted multiminiature microcontrollers used as brain modules for higher ordered learning, and a slew of new servos.

Humanoid is not yet hardware complete. Some new details are being worked out on the controller, since, as you already know, I switched controllers to a newer module with USB capability.

Wireless Division - Bluetooth I created a new division for wireless, and developing the 802 standard and Bluetooth for RS232 cable replacement. This wireless will also extend to internet for various functions not stored within the humanoid.

Invention and Science Several inventions have resulted from creating various hardware and software. I'm currently looking at what to do with these various breakthroughs in science.

The Excitement This is a very exciting time, with the uprising of humanoid robots, their beginning to walk, talk, sing, dance, compete in Robo-One contests, do martial arts, and take on a miriad of other functions. We'll need to concentrate on adding intelligence as well, and the field of AI is fast growing. Once Mechantron and Humanoid are more complete, we'll concentrate on adding intelligence, though, it's a step-by-step process that will garner intelligence with module by module as they are added. 12.27.06 Welcome to my new Humanoid Robotics Laboratory! It seems like a couple years of absence, however, I've established an all new humanoid robotics base located in the Asian Arena. It's here that humanoid robots are rapidly developing. It's where technology is amazing, parts sources abundant, knowledge is readily available, and it seems that every major company has or is developing its own humanoid robot. It's where it only takes a hop skip and jump to traverse from Japan/ China/ Taiwan/ Korea/ Singapore - all major players in the humanoid robotics world.

The new Humanoid Robotics Laboratory is progressing rapidly. Today we procured our IBM computers and categorized the following Laboratory divisions:

The humanoid Manatron project is complete. It's a remarkable symbiotic union of technologies. It's led to unbelievable things! Expanding, I've moved on with two new bipeds, both advanced humanoids. The first is undergoing final wiring constructs with programming, designed to become a market product.

The second is standing by the closet waiting for a head. It represents a quantum leap of technology - bridging the gap between now and the future. A parts order will arrive today or tomorrow. Then work will continue on humanoid #2.

Since moving to the Republic of China from the USA, boxes are still arriving by mail and work includes setting up home and a humanoid robotics laboratory. There's a tiny library of books - language, electronics, robotics, programming and engineering next to the lab. The shelves overflow with various assorted robots and humanoid parts. There's humanoid stuff stowed in the closet, under the bed, in desk drawers, on shelves, and in boxes!

Since the startup company (Humanoid Robotics Laboratory), things are rapidly progressing. In the Asian Arena, there's access to a new world of humanoid robotics technology. There's hundreds of computer and electronics parts stores, a SONY store with many robots, governments that support humanoid robots, companies developing their own humanoids to demonstrate their advanced technologies, and thousands of hobbyists - each with their own versions of walking humanoids. Here, not all robots are seen as terminators out to destroy mankind, but rather as benign constructive helping robots.

A big plus living here is easy access to many trade robotics shows such as Robodex, RoboOne, etc. I can only describe my experience like a voyage to another planet - a real dream come true, even if I must run the air conditioner from time to time in December. :-)

I'd like to thank Ken Gracey for providing robotic parts and some computers for this wonderful project. Ken and Parallax were awesome and I'd recommend Parallax for their many fine products and most outstanding product support.

I've had the best of luck with their Basic Stamp Computers. Although I have several others, I prefer the Basic Stamp 2. This is why a handful of BS2 computers was successfully used in project Manatron.

Notice I call these computers rather than microcontrollers because after upgrading them with displays, supporting boards, memory, keyboards, sw, etc., they more resemble microcomputers.

mikegotis - Now that Manatron humanoid robot is completed, it will be interesting to run more experiments on the humanoid language core. Though there are memory constrains, it's still quite possible to expand the speech capabilities using a programmable matrix. It would be nice to have a light cube of known refractory index to hold the speech buffer and develop a lightspeed holo version. That kind of light compression allows multiple channels and much greater language capacity (multi-languages). When you shoot through language rays, you truly feel like a pilot of a lightspeed galaxy class star ship! Using monochromatic single sourced laser light allows trail and density viewings by ocular inspection. To let you know how serious I've become about HLC, I recently purchased 40 monochromatic lasers to substantially increase the number of three dimensional light channels. Currently that gives more power than I can use at the moment. Although these paths are currently micrometrically positioned, I can envision a computerized system with ms timing, automatically positioned.

It's interesting to note Alta Vista translators and similar have steadily increased the number of languges that can be translated bidirectionally. The method of translation is to translate each word and then its left up to the listener or reader to decipher the meanings, brute force if you will. In the humanoid language core however, we can choose the modus operandi, and specify the constraints. We therefore have greater language controls. Mike Otis

MANaTRON humanoid is an autonomous biped robot that accomplishes a lot with only 6 servos - walk, talk, see, balance, dance, and Tai Chi Martial Arts. Its success is due to a handful of networked Basic Stamp computers and an innovative light weight aluminum exoskeleton.

Taking two years to build from 2002 to 2004, he?TM]s the latest ?enumber five†in a family of robots, and the first biped humanoid in this series. There were ten variations of MANaTRON named ?ePrimary Tertiary Adjunct (1 to 10) of ten†as a tribute to Seven of Nine in Star Trek.

A programmable robotic voice, based on the popular GI- SPO256 speech synthesizer chip and a custom language core, forms speech in 6 languages.

MANaTRON has motion controlled feet, legs, arms, torso, and head, using hobby servos and tiny computer networks. Multiple miniature robotic computers are task dedicated for specific functions and have their own operating systems.

While these tiny computers serve as a higher ordered brain, talking back and forth, they have modular and core programming to facilitate added programming, routines, or more brain core.

Rechargeable 9-volt and AA Batteries distributed throughout the body maintain center of gravity. The low number of servos combined with extra powerful Nickel Metal Hydride cells is a great combination for maximizing LBC (life between charges).

Parts are taken from various sources inclusive of kitchen tin cans, materials from the Republic of China, and a Toddler robot kit. Four added motions are accomplished with a mechanical mobility core. A miniature mercury inclinometer improves walking on inclined surfaces.

PBASIC Programming software is uploaded to BS2s with a portable Apple Macintosh iBook computer running OSX and MACBS2. The humanoid has its own unique OS for extended capability.

The development brain during "grow up, teach, and test" phases, consisted of tiny OEM computers, solderless breadboard, matrix keyboard, 64K RAM, LCD, controller, speech board, and LEDs. To formulate the range of motion, upper body mechanics were mounted on a large Chinese Cola bottle. Legs were treated as a module. Then, calculated motions were programmed, everything was assembled, and finally, the contents of one brain was transferred to the other.

Seeing the humanoid move slowly, executing Tai Chi Martial Arts with robo-precision, or dance the motions to a heartfelt love song is enough to make lasting impressions on those who see it for the first time! It would be exciting to take MANaTRON across the USA, Germany, Russia, China, Japan, and Indian Reservations, because he speaks the language!

MANaTRON Humanoid Robot now speaks in six languages. I recently completed a second "MANaTron" Humanoid Robot web page at

This one contains information about how the humanoid was built, the SPO256 electronic allophone speech chip, construction, and links. The photo is also much larger and more detailed than the first. This shows the exoskeleton and other aspects.

Work on a new project is proceeding nicely, called the Humanoid language Core (HLC), primarily software based at this time, it gathers information to speak in six languages. A working proto is installed inside MANaTRON.
