Im happy to announce that TLN is now a proud owner
of our very own MAKERBOT!
(Whats a makerbot?).

This is the cream of the crop / top of the line MakerBot, it's set up for batch processing and multi part runs, both perfect for printing out kits!

We'll have it in house in about a month, so get your 3D software loaded up and start making some designs!

Living in the future is awesome!

Robot Users Group - we thank you!

Special thanks goes out to the RUG website (http://www.rugcommunity.org) for donating some much needed parts to TLN so that we can get working on our beetle weight combat robot.

it's unlikely that we will be ready in time for the currently scheduled battle (info here).. but we will give it a shot, and will most definitely  be ready for the next scheduled event!

an arduino based "you program it" handheld game system from
Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories

i gotta say, i really REALLY love this thing! ....

i got mine as a kit, it was really fun and easy to build, GREAT instructions and awesome customer support. (had a broken part, replaced with out issue)

while taking a break from working on Traumalo 2.0, i decided to bust out the meggy and start messin' with it again ... i had a cool idea for a shooter / race game but no sooner did i get the unit hooked up, i found myself playing a game i had worked on back when i 1st got the meggy.

this was a lot more like a buncha test code than an actual game, but it was still interesting and kinda fun to play...and wouldnt ya know it... i actually got some cool ideas on how to make it into a REAL game....SOOoooooo... i put the new game on hold (lotta learning involved to get it working anyway..lol).

the game was originally called "frantic" ... i think i might change it to "swarm"...anyway, game play goes like this:
there is a crazy dot that blinks around the screen randomly,  and there is a lovely gold trinket that is randomly placed on the screen, your goal is to move your dot to the gold trinket without getting attacked by the evil red dot...mind you the dot does not recognize or acknowledge your position, it jsut randomly flits about.

when you reach the gold trinket, you are rewarded with points, the gold dot moves to a new location, and the evil red dot speeds up.

after reaching the gold 3 times, another evil red dot is added .... 3 more times and ANOTHER red dot is added...etc..etc...

over all it's a pretty simple game, but it does have an addiction factor to it ....
and isnt that all ya really want in a game anyway!?!

Traumalo 2.0 update

Things are running fairly smoothly with Traumalo 2.0..

the latest batch of accomplishments are:

  • Encoder functionality
  • New serial LCD display
  • Visual Menu system
  • Save and recall multiple user settings 
All of the above have been tested and are in working order!

Next "to do" items on the list are:
  • test / program the rotary switch (mem recall) 
  • wire up the multiplexer (MUX) to all the pots
  • combine all of the working pieces of code into a single program (sketch)
  • wire up the sensor box
  • layout & wire up all the hardware together onto the Prototino board
  • final testing
  • silkscreen front panel of enclosure
  • final assembly
videos of the process have been lacking mainly due to the inability to record the lcd screen properly!
i will have some vids of the silkscreen process and the assembly of the unit... as well as any testing involving audio that i may do....

so, stay tuned....
and in the meantime.... go make some stuff of your own!!!

Traumalo 2.0

Taking on a digital version of the Traumalo has been proving to be both rewarding and stressful!
I was surprised to see how quickly i was able to use up all the I/O i had available as well as how fast i was able to push my previous knowledge AND the micro-controller to their limits!

1st stumbling block was MULTI-THREADING!...or should i say "lack there of!".....
im used to be being able to just spit out a buncha code commands at once and have them all fire simultaneously .... well, seems ya can't do that in "C", so the hunt was on for a solution...

came across a handy piece of code on the ARDUINO forum, that with a little bit of tweaking worked out perfectly... now my commands seem to happen at the same time, instead of sequentially!

Next hurdle was ANALOG INPUTs ... i ran outta them! ... so i had to learn about multiplexers and although they aren't all the difficult in theory, we'll see how easy it is to implement once it arrives in the mail.

so far i have 2 of the 3 mutators up and running and im currently working on the "save" and "recall" functionality ...
