The McGill University Reporter has published a new article describing the work of James Smith and other researchers on Scout II, the first four-legged robot capable of dynamically stable galloping. Scout II is also good at walking, running, and even trotting (with his optional knees). Scout II is a fully autonomous robot equipped with a video camera for vision and laser sensors. In addition to Scout II, the article describes other robots being developed at the McGill Centre for Intelligent Machines such as RHex and its underwater companion, Aqua.
It's really pretty cool. I saw a video clip of it, and it can run like crazy. Of course the robotic cockroach "Sprawlita" was great too, it looks like it goes 25mph on six legs. Those legs are like fuzzy blurs it's so fast.
