STD Bus still chugging along after 25 yr

The STD bus was one of (if not the) first standardized bus designed specifically for industrial applications - way back in the 70s. It's very rugged and handles shock and vibration good. An engineer mentioned recently he was going to put an STD bus system on a mobile robot. Over the years, faster buses like PC104 have taken the lime-light but STD keeps chugging along winning new designs all the time - thanks to Pentium processors, solid state disks and other newer technology that has been ported over. The STD Bus FAQ has recently been updated at http://www.controlled.com/std/faq.html. The STD Bus might be a good option for outdoor robots such as minefield, irrigation, etc.
