Boeing's new UAV, the ScanEagle, recently completed its first autonomous test flight. The ScanEagle UAV is designed to be launched from a pneumatic catapult and lands by catching a rope hanging from a 30-foot-high pole, called a skyhook. The UAV was designed for Boeing by the Insitu Group and is based on Insitu's SeaScan UAV. The small ScanEagle and SeaScan UAVs are intended for Coast Guard and Civilian ship-based surveillance work. Photos of the ScanEagle and SeaScan robot planes are available on Insitu's web site.
