Rich Kappmeier has written a useful article for the Seattle Robotic Society Encoder newsletter describing a smart IR proximity detector. Rich combined a 555 timer, a Sharp GP1U26X infrared detector, and a little fuzzy logic to create a proximity sensor that is reliable even in bright sunlight.
