USA Today reports that a small robot will open the anthrax letter mailed to Sen. Patrick Leahy. The use of the robot is intended to minimize the loss of any possible evidence including the anthrax spores themselves, fingerprints, hairs, and DNA that might be found on or in the envelope. This is part of a complex analysis protocol developed by the FBI, CDC, and a panel of outside experts to maximize the chance of finding useful forensic data from the envelope which was discovered in one of 280 barrels of mail held at a contaiment facility.
