The Orange County Register is carrying an article on the current state of AI research. They talk with several researchers from the UCI AI Lab about robotics, knowledge, and intelligence. Their conclusion is that enthusiam for AI research has fizzled and the development of anything remotely resembling a human-like machine is a long way off.
