LEGO Claims NTX Code to be Open Sourced

Posted 1 May 2006 at 15:20 UTC by steve Share This

LEGO issued a press release today claiming they intend to release the MINDSTORMS NTX brick firmware as Open Source sometime in August. NTX is the new version of the popular LEGO MINDSTORMS robotics hardware. The press release doesn't mention if they'll be using the standard GNU GPL Free Software license or some other approved Open Source license. Søren Lund, director of LEGO MINDSTORMS, is quoted as saying, "the right to hack is a 'no brainer' ". We'll have to wait until August to see if they carry through with their promise but it certainly sounds like LEGO has had a postive change of philosophy on software.
