The Neuroscience of Consciousness

Gerhard Werner has published an essay titled Perspectives on the Neuroscience of Cognition and Consciousness (PDF format). In it he attempts to propose a neurobiological framework that supports John Searle's philosophical claims about conscsiousness - that it's the result of nonlinear dynamic properties of biological neurons, realized in state space. More interestingly, he traces the history of neuroscience and points out what he thinks are incorrect ideas which have become obstacles to further progress.
