JPL engineers are working on Urbie the Urban Robot which may someday be used by Police and Law Enforcement to provide Urban reconnaissance. Urbie is autonomous, has stereoscopic vision, night vision, arms, two-axis scanning laser range finder, etc, etc. Urbie can drive by itself, climb stairs and even avoid obstacles autonomously; just about anything short of arresting the bad guy.
