Robo-Bridge

Posted 7 Mar 2006 at 15:34 UTC by Rog-a-matic Share This

The U.S. Army has awarded a contract to build a prototype robotic bridge to TIAX as part of the the Army Future Combat System program. Not 'robotic' as in remote control, those already exist. This design is truly autonomous and does NOT have to be manually launched or retrieved. The lightweight materials will be strong enough to carry 30 tons over a 14 meter gap. Robo-bridge might also come in handy for disaster response teams. If emergent behavior such as finger-pointing and bickering can be prevented, robots stand a good chance at beating humans to the next natural disaster rescue mission!
