A Popular Science article offers an update on the General Dynamics Experimental Unmanned Vehicle (XUV) that's being developed as part of the DoD's Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) program. While the XUV and other autonomous robots may soon join soldiers on the battle field, the DoD is hesitant about allowing armed ground robots full autonomy. Their current guidelines call for semi-autonomous operation in which weapons fire may only be initiated and controlled by a human soldiers on the ground. The article covers several other UGVs and also mentions some of the DARPA Grand Challenge robots.
