MANOI Based on the Kondo KHR-1 Robot

Engadget brings to our attention the MANOI robot. But what's really cool is the makers (Capital Trade Inc.) basically just took a Kondo KHR-1 robot and added a custom plastic shell. Is this the first of many similar toys to come out based on Kondo KHR-1? The Kondo KHR-1 is a small 16" tall humanoid robot kit built just like you would make if you had a bunch of servos (17 servos?) and some sheet metal. But why go through all the trouble of recreating such a robot when you can just buy a kit and put some plastic on it? So now I'm wondering if our recently reported Robofie might also be based on the Kondo KHR-1? Perhaps Kondo, and not Robofie, is the real underlying Robosapien killer? Sozbots has some noisy servo video of the Kondo KHR-1 robot in action.

Very familiar..., posted 25 Sep 2005 at 03:29 UTC by Cannon Fury » (Journeyer)

I have seen a robot with a very similar looking shell to the Manoi before, I believe it was being developed by a university in Japan. I'll try to find a link, but if anyone else knows the one I'm talking about please post it.
