RUBI the Nursery Teacher Robot

Posted 25 Jun 2005 at 04:41 UTC by The Swirling Brain Share This

Rubi is the new robotic nursery teacher in town. RUBI is an acronym for Robot Using Bayesian Inference and is a project of The Machine Perception Laboratory at the University of California, San Diego. UCSD is using Rubi together with Sony's QRIO robot as a long-term research study to investigate the uses of interactive computers in educational environments and to advance the field of real-time, social robotics. The Rubi nursery robot is three foot tall is soft, warm and pleasantly plump. Kids can hug it but it doesn't hug them back. It displays facial expressions to keep the toddler's attention and on its chest it has a TV for kids to play certain computer games with it. The researchers evaluate how the toddlers respond to the robots and which teaching methods work the best. Future plans include improving the robots interactive nature but the program will continue as funds dictate.
