Ice Borehole Cryobot Explores Antartica

Posted 29 May 2001 at 17:37 UTC by The Swirling Brain Share This

Space.com has an article about a Cryobot that explores the Antartic. This cool probe can melt it's way though layers of ice and then takes pictures of what may be under the layers of ice. This bot might be useful for a trip to Mars to explore the ice caps or to Europa to search under the thick layer of ice to the suspected ocean underneath. The probe has already proved itself in the Antartic and may someday prove itself on other worlds. The bot is designed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and is part of the JPL Antartic Ice Borehole Probe project.

Also, here's an interview with the chief engineer of the probe, Dr. Alberto Behar.

Here's some other articles about the probe here and here and here and here.

Here's a video from the probe.
