DARPA Plans for 2005

The deadline for DARPA Grand Challenge applications has passed with 181 teams now listed on their website. But what else is DARPA up to besides the Grand Challenge? For the answer see the recently released DARPA 2005 Strategic Plan (PDF format). The document also describes what they've accomplished since their inception in 1958. Besides things like TCP/IP and the M16 rifle, they're responsible for a lot of robotics research including the Predator, Global Hawk, and a variety of ground robots. They're working on more cool stuff for the future like chip-scale atomic clocks, 3D circuit boards, micro-sized robot air vehicles, unmanned ground combat vehicles (UGCVs), and cognitive computing which involves humans and machines thinking together symbiotically. They note in the plan that they are now authorized by law to "offer cash prizes to encourage and accelerate technical accomplishments" but they don't give any hints as to whether there will be a third Grand Challenge or not.
