As robot technology continues to improve, it's becoming possible to give our robots much more interesting appearances. For some designers, like David Hanson this means exploring the uncanny valley where robots become androids that look almost (but not quite) human. For others designers, like White Box Robotics, this means the chance to make robots that look as good as any we've seen in Star Wars. David Hanson is making news again this week in the Deleware News Journal and Newsday.com. The White Box Robotics 912 HMV, meanwhile, was covered today by an ABC News SCI/Tech article.
Those interested in exploring the uncanny valley in more detail might want to attend the IEEE-RAS Humanoids-2005 Workshop: Views on the Uncanny Valley, held in Tsukuba, Japan on December 5, 2005.
