We've been reporting on Hans Moravec's probabilistic volumetric sensing since 2001. Last year Moravec and Scott Friedman founded a company called SEEGRID Corporation to commercialize Moravec's robot perception and navigation ideas. SEEGRID's website is now online and offers more information about the intriguing technologies they're working on such as the SEEGRID NavSystem. The website also indicates that Ray Kurzweil has joined SEEGRID as an investor and is serving on the board of directors.
I've been interested in stereo vision for a long time, and I think that Moravec's system could be a killer application for robotics if it really lives up to the sort of performance that you can see on his web site. I bet the first SeeGrid products will be very expensive but I hope that eventually they'll be cheap enough to use on home robots.
