Sony Claims Humanoid Robot First

Posted 18 Dec 2003 at 15:47 UTC by steve Share This

A press release from Sony claims they have developed the world's first fully autonomous humanoid robot with internal power and control that is capable of running. The robot is an upgraded version of the Sony QRIO, a robot we've seen before. The robot uses a control theory called Zero Moment Point (ZMP) and in addition to running is capable of other extreme motion that involves one or both feet leaving the ground such as jumping. Additional photos of QRIO in action can be found on the Japanese PC Watch site. There's also a Slashdot discussion about QRIO.

- - it's still an expensive, totally useless thing that you would get sick of looking at, but wouldn't throw out because it costs so much.

Don't give your kid a Sony robot for Christmas, give him a puppy instead.

They're cute until they start carrying rifles.

That depends on the breed- - -, posted 23 Dec 2003 at 19:56 UTC by Frank McNeill » (Apprentice)

- - coon dogs carry rifles, but most bird dogs prefer shotguns.
